The Base puts a quick hold on a fast moving basement fire
03/27/08 - Lake Shore was dispatched at 11:21hrs to a reported smoke in the building. Mutual aid from Fairview FD for one engine and West Lake FD for Truck 2 were dispatched for automatic mutual aid. Engine 55 and Engine 53 from LSFD responded, E53 arrived on scene to find a two story wood frame residence with nothing showing. Chief 500 established command and ordered E55 to set up at the hydrant and Truck 2 directly into the scene. The homeowner stated that there was smoke in the house when she came home and she had been running a clothes dryer in the basement before she had left. Alpha crew entered in sector 1/level 1 and was met with thick black smoke that appeared to be coming from the heating vents. Alpha crew put an 1 3/4'' pre connect hose line in service and with the assistance of E55's crew made their way to the basement. Alpha crew was met with intense heat and black smoke in the basement. Truck 2's crew was assigned to the first and second floors to check for extension. Alpha crew found the source of the blaze and extinguished the fire. C481 of WLFD vented the basement using three basement windows from the exterior. E532 from FFD arrived and assisted in checking for extension and salvage/overhaul. Crews had difficulty checking for extension due to half the basement being just a crawl space in which the fire had extended. The fire was put under control approximately 25 minutes after arrival. The first and second floors only received minor to moderate smoke damage, however the heat coming up through the vents had caused a few non-structural components on the first floor to catch fire. The cause of the fire appeared to be electrical in nature. LSFD would like to thank all mutual aid companies that responded.
The day stayed busy for the "Base". After units cleared the fire grounds, the Base received three EMS calls and the Chief was busy on the Fire Grounds with the State Police Fire Investigator.. Two of the EMS calls were shortly after the fire delaying the crew from returning equipment in service. However, we got it done. You Know!
