The Base
puts a quick hold on a fast moving basement fire
03/27/08
- Lake Shore was dispatched at 11:21hrs to a reported smoke in the
building. Mutual aid from Fairview FD for one engine and West Lake FD for
Truck 2 were dispatched for automatic mutual aid. Engine 55 and Engine 53
from LSFD responded, E53 arrived on scene to find a two story wood frame
residence with nothing showing. Chief 500 established command and ordered
E55 to set up at the hydrant and Truck 2 directly into the scene. The
homeowner stated that there was smoke in the house when she came home and
she had been running a clothes dryer in the basement before she had left.
Alpha crew entered in sector 1/level 1 and was met with thick black smoke
that appeared to be coming from the heating vents. Alpha crew put an 1 3/4''
pre connect hose line in service and with the assistance of E55's crew made
their way to the basement. Alpha crew was met with intense heat and black
smoke in the basement. Truck 2's crew was assigned to the first and second
floors to check for extension. Alpha crew found the source of the blaze and
extinguished the fire. C481 of WLFD vented the basement using three basement
windows from the exterior. E532 from FFD arrived and assisted in checking
for extension and salvage/overhaul. Crews had difficulty checking for
extension due to half the basement being just a crawl space in which the
fire had extended. The fire was put under control approximately 25 minutes
after arrival. The first and second floors only received minor to moderate
smoke damage, however the heat coming up through the vents had caused a
few non-structural components on the first floor to catch fire. The cause of
the fire appeared to be electrical in nature. LSFD would like to thank all
mutual aid companies that responded.
The day stayed busy for the
"Base". After units cleared the fire grounds, the Base received three EMS
calls and the Chief was busy on the Fire Grounds with the State Police Fire
Investigator.. Two of the EMS calls were shortly after the fire delaying the
crew from returning equipment in service. However, we got it done. You Know!

03/10/08
- At 17:26, Lake Shore, Fairview, and West Lake Fire Departments along with

fire. Caller reported that flames were shooting out of the chimney. Lake
Shore Chief 500 and West Lake Chief 480 arrived on scene and reported smoke
showing. Engine 55 took the address and crew went inside the house to
investigate. The crew from West Lake Truck 2 laddered the building and
checked the chimney. A small fire was located at the top of the chimney
which was put out using a dry-chem extinguisher. Crews inside found no
extension of the fire. Engine 55 and Truck 2 handled the call and all other
responding units were placed in service. Residents were advised to have the
chimney cleaned and inspected before using again.

family trying to light the fire place. Due to the cold and snowy weather,
the smoke was pushed back into the house causing the fire alarm to activate.
Chief 500 had command. The snow was up to the crews knees as they were
trying to get to the front door of the house. Click on the picture for more
photos. Also included are photos of the road conditions during the response.

the address and to take the Thermal Imaging Camera inside. Crews found a
broken water register that caused the alarm. Tanker 56 was advised to
stand-by at the station and was cleared about 20 minutes later. The home was
turned over the the Homeowner and crews returned.

District Stays Busy With Engine Runs
12/03/07 - Friday
November 30th LSFD had a total of three engine runs within a ten hour
period. The first was an automatic Fire Alarm at Fairview Manor Nursing home
at 0607hrs in the morning. E53 responded to the alarm and it was determined
to be a false alarm caused by a bad detector. Hours later at 1147hrs LSFD
was dispatched to a Smoke in the Building call at 5602 Bonaventure Dr. E55
and E53 responded along with T2 WLFD and E532 FFD. E55 arrived to find no
obvious conditions however upon crews entering the basement of the
structure it was found to have light smoke conditions. After investigating
crews found that an electrical malfunction in a space heater was the cause
of smoke. Crews ventilated the structure and cleared a short time later.
After time to wash the truck and a break for lunch LSFD and surrounding
Depts. crews were back at it again. At 1516hrs LSFD was dispatched to
another smoke in the building call. E55 responded on the call. T2 from WLFD
and E532 FFD also responded again. E55 arrived on scene to find a two story
wood frame residence with nothing showing. E55's crew investigated while T2
staged on Lake Shore Dr. and E532 took the hydrant. E55's crew found that
the smoke was caused by an over heated cloths dryer. The structure was
vented and all units cleared the scene.
Fire Alarm
Turns Into Structure Fire
11/10/07 - Lake Shore
was alerted at 1:58 in the morning for two engines to assist Fairview Fire
Dept to the 7200 block of West Ridge Rd to a dentist office for a structure
fire. The original call for Fairview was a fire alarm. West County Medic 3
arrived on scene to find smoke showing and the sounds of fire from the attic
space. Engine 55 responded with 5, and Engine 53 was shortly behind 55 with
6. Upon arriving on scene Chief 520 from Fairview assigned the crew from
Eng. 55 to do a secondary search of the structure. Upon completing that, the
